2013 dodge avenger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Midsize sedan is powerful, comfortable. introductionthe dodge avenger is an honest, straightforward sedan at a good price. In certain respects it's less sophisticated than some competitors, but it's powerful, comfortable and reasonably economical to operate. It's also quiet and pleasant to drive. avenger was launched as a 2008 model. A thorough update for the 2011 model year made the avenger much more competitive in key areas. Avenger r/t joined the lineup for 2012. Avenger carries over to 2013 unchanged. dodge calls the avenger america's most affordable mid-size sedan, and based on current retail prices, we can't disagree. Yet the avenger isn't just selling price. We might call it a mid-size package with compact value. the 2008 avenger appeared looking like a scaled-down version of the hot-selling, full-size dodge charger. Since then, the charger has moved on to a new look, while the avenger has remained mostly unchanged. It's still clean, tightly creased and not bad looking, but without the more dramatic proportions of the bigger car it doesn't stand out. Its basic visual impact is retrograde. the cabin contributes to a relaxing, pleasant driving experience. The quality of the interior materials isn't the best in the class, but the avenger is comfortable and the controls are intuitive and easy to use. avenger se retails for hundreds of dollars less than the next competitive mid-size sedan, and it comes well equipped. With the 4-speed automatic transmission, the avenger se is epa-rated at 21/30 mpg city/highway. The price is thousands less than other mid-size v6s, yet it's the most powerful v6 in its class. Epa ratings are 19/29 mpg. avenger r/t comes with the v6, a sports suspension and racy stripes and interior treatment. Loaded with navigation and the boston acoustics audio upgrade, an avenger r/t barely cracks $27,000. the avenger chassis is shared with the chrysler 200, which was designed to be a convertible as well as a sedan, so the chassis is stiff and strong. Dodge aced the suspension, and both ride quality and cornering response are excellent, benefits of that rigid chassis. V6 is optional 1,795). It also comes with foglights, the cold weather package, the media center, boston acoustics audio, and other goodies. However, it does not stand out and gets lost among all the mid-size sedans. avenger's shape suggests the 2006-10 charger, especially at the hips and roofline, but doesn't inspire like the charger does. Its clean look is emphasized by the lack of cladding or ding strips on the sides and body-colored door handles and mirrors (except on the base se). The bumpers, front and rear, are smooth. The black egg-crate grille adds visual interest. the crosshair grille is a dodge trademark, and the avenger uses black crosshairs lightly outlined in chrome. It's easy to spot for its distinctive 10-spoke alloy wheels, black headlight background and go-fast slash stripes on the front fenders. The body-colored outline of the black crosshair on the r/t grille helps. the new blacktop package applies the look of the r/t to the sxt, minus the tape stripes and substituting unique black-painted alloy wheels. Most cars in the mid-size class are trying to look like sleek luxury sedans, with varying degrees of success. It's not particularly exciting, but neither is it annoying, frustrating, or inconvenient, as are many cars with interiors and controls that try to do too much or be cool. The avenger is simple: everything in its correct place, and not too much of it. That alone makes driving more relaxing. the dashboard is big and slabby, perhaps described as monolithic. The doors are well designed, with comfortable armrests, a good grab handle, door pockets, and small levers that make opening easy. The best part of the interior might be the expensive feel of the perforated leather on the steering wheel, standard on all but the base se. The worst part might be some cheap looking chrome and faux aluminum trim. An interior overhaul for 2011 improved fit and finish substantially, but the avenger's interior materials are still not best in class. in the front seats, avenger feels a little more enclosed than the roomiest cars in its class, partly for the massive impact of the dash, but it doesn't feel confining. The fabric on the base seats is good and rugged, though a bit boring in light colors and better in black. The front seats are comfortable for cruising and long hauls, but not as supportive as they might be in corners. Those in the sporty r/t have leather bolsters, red stitching and unique, z-striped fabric inserts. The bolstering improves a bit, but the sport seats are still a bit too much like heavy, cushy barcaloungers for truly aggressive driving. the instrument package is a nicely lit cluster of three gauges, with the largest in the center and one on either inside. All models have a tach, and a fuel/temperature package on the left, with a digital display on the bottom that allows the driver to scroll various options. On other models, the speedo stays in the center, and the problem reading the right gauge (the tach) becomes a little less crucial. the avenger has thumb-wheel controls for cruise and audio on the steering-wheel spokes. The lights, wipers etc. On the column stalks are easy to find and operate, but the stalks themselves feel a bit more shaky or wobbly than those in some competitors. There are three big, solid, perfectly placed knobs for climate control at the bottom of the center stack. It makes for one of the easiest. Believe it or not, refinement. introductionthe dodge durango is big and powerful with bold styling. Yet it's surprisingly refined, benefiting from a complete redesign for the 2004 model year. It's quiet, it rides smoothly, and its handling is stable and relatively agile. Efficient packaging has resulted in lots of cabin space for people and cargo. the first-generation durango was rough around the edges, but the current model is far more refined. Inside is a quiet, roomy, comfortable and technologically sophisticated cabin. Bigger than the first-generation models, the durango now fits between the chevy tahoe and ford expedition in terms of size. A space-efficient design makes maximum use of the durango's size and it can seat up to seven passengers with the optional third row. two v8s are available and both are superb. The popular 4. 7-liter v8 and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 are smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, smart and responsive. There's also a v6. the 2005 durango lineup adds new sxt and adventurer models and the availability of heated cloth seats and a full-screen navigation system. lineupthe 2005 dodge durango features an expanded model line: st, slt, limited, and the new stx and adventurer models. Electronic stability control is not available. Redesigned for 2004, the durango takes styling cues come from the 1946 dodge power wagon. durango's big-rig look is accentuated by its short hood. That short hood leads into a steeply raked windshield and sloping roof. The fender flares resemble those of a semi. The front fenders make the hood look as narrow as it is short. the roofline slopes briefly downward at the rear, and the liftgate window curves in to meet it. This reduces that boxy look common on so many suvs and minivans. Durango's taillights are distinctive as well, looking like afterburners from a jet fighter with two big red stacked circles per side. The sheet metal is molded around them to suggest speed. chrysler has an expensive new wind tunnel at its headquarters in auburn hills, michigan, and it was used extensively with the durango to reduce wind noise. The aerodynamics are fine tuned, including the mirrors and the subtle ducktail at the trailing edge of the hood under the wipers, for reducing wind noise over the windshield. The motor mounts were calibrated to reduce the frequencies and harmonics of each engine. The windows have an extra layer of lamination to deaden sound. Foam is injected into many of the body and chassis crannies, which would otherwise serve as tiny echo chambers. interiorwith a large amount of glass and huge cargo space, the durango feels big spacious. It's officially classified as a mid-size suv, like the explorer, but it's bigger than that and everything about it feels like a full-size. there is 68 cubic feet with the third row folded away, 102 cubic feet with the second row down. The distance between the wheel housings is 48 inches, good for loading wide cargo. And from the outside, the liftgate opens very easily. The cargo floor is relatively low thanks to the rear suspension design. the second and third rows are notably easy to access, as the rear doors open an exceptionally wide 84 degrees. The second-row seat easily flips forward with the touch of one hand, and the seatback flops flat just as easily. This is no small virtue. the second-row seats recline and have their own climate control, so back-seat passengers can snooze in comfort. Details are thought out, including convenient grab handles cleverly molded into the stubby rear leg of the second-row seat, which ease climbing back to the third row. The slt has orange-hued wood trim, while the limited presents a cleaner look with its brushed aluminum. (that's real wood and real aluminum, not plastic.) instrumentation is clean, handsome, easy to read and easy to operate. We especially like the simple black-on-white gauges and rectangular black venetian-blind style heating and cooling vents. The center console is deep, under a removable tray. Forward of that is another important compartment designed to serve as a fast-food bin. Two integrated cup holders with removable neoprene for different sizes of drink containers are provided. we found the slt's manual heating controls and the wiper controls a bit fussy, and the high beams seemed a little lacking one wintry night. Better are the limited model's high-tech climate-control panel with automatic temperature adjustment. It's smooth and quiet, quite different from the relatively noisy, rough-riding pre-2004 models. Both v8 engines are good choices. the 4. 7-liter engine is really good. It's powerful and really smooth. The 4. 7-liter v8 is rated at 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. But it only gets 14/18 mpg in 4wd, using 87 octane, and the more we looked at that versus the 5. 7-liter hemi, the more we gravitated to the bigger engine. the 5. 7-liter hemi is rated at 335 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. That's a lot more power than the 4. 7-liter while providing almost the same economy, 13/18 mpg with 89 octane recommended, 87 acceptable. For $895 more, the hemi seems like a no-brainer; plus, it can tow up to 8,950 pounds with the optional 3. 92 rear axle, compared to 7,400 for the 4. 7. And the two-speed transfer case is standard with the hemi 4x4, optional with the other engines. hemi, by the way, refers to the overhead-valve, hemispherical combustion chamber design, and harkens back to the late '60s when the 426-cubic-inch (7. 0-liter) dodge hemi ramcharger ruled. The 5. 7-liter felt a little more powerful than the 4. 7-liter, but it wasn't a night-and-day difference. The double overhead-cam, 5. 6-liter, 305-horsepower nissan armada feels like it has more oomph than the 5. 7-liter durango, which feels solid, but heavy. for its part, the 3. 7-liter v6 is rated at 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque and 16/21 mpg. 2006 dodge grand caravan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth riding and responsive, most come with a powerful v6 engine that delivers strong acceleration for merging onto hectic freeways. Anti-lock brakes and side-impact airbags are available. And there's a model for every budget. dodge redesigned the seating system last year, and the result is one of the most versatile interiors available for a family vehicle. Called stow 'n go, the optional system features second-row and third-row seats that flip down into the floor, leaving a huge, perfectly flat cargo compartment behind the front seats. And its cargo space is more accessible and more convenient than that of suvs. with the seats in place, the grand caravan can carry seven. Selectively folding away the seats allows versatility in hauling a mix of passengers and cargo. No need to pull the seats out and store them in the garage or to try to put stuff on top of them. the current model dates back to 1996, but dodge has continuously improved it since then. The 2005 model year brought substantial upgrades. It comes with hand-crank windows, manually adjusted mirrors, and a limited list of options, although rear-seat video entertainment is now available on all caravan models. It does have standard air conditioning, variable intermittent wipers, am/fm/cd stereo, and 215/70 tires on 15-inch steel wheels. The tire-pressure monitor is standard, but stow'n go seats are not available. caravan sxt 22,225) is the short van equipped with a 3. 3-liter v6 and a higher level of standard equipment, though it does not get stow 'n go. Sxt does add second-row bucket seats, dual-zone manual air conditioning, tilt steering, cruise control, power windows, power heated mirrors, power locks with remote keyless entry, an upgraded am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, a rear window defroster, sunscreen glass, 215/65 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels, and other niceties, plus an expanded list of options. grand caravan se 22,920) is a long-wheelbase base model similarly equipped to the caravan se. But it's powered by the 3. 3-liter v6 engine, and comes with more sophisticated airbags with occupant classification system (ocs) and driver's side inflatable knee blocker. Front seatbelts use pre-tensioners to take up slack during a collision. Middle- and third-row seats include child-seat anchors for a more secure installation. Optional side curtain airbags are designed to offer head protection for outboard occupants in all three rows. walkarounddodge caravan and grand caravan are large vehicles, but not outrageously so. Measuring 200 inches long and less than 5-feet, 9-inches tall, even the grand caravan will fit just about anywhere a full-size sedan will fit. The standard caravan measures 189. 3 inches bumper to bumper. Grand caravan's extra 11 inches makes a big difference in the amount of cargo it can carry with all three rows of seats in place. Caravan rides on a wheelbase of 113. 3 inches, while the grand caravan stretches across a wheelbase of 119. 3 inches. grand caravan and caravan are sleek and attractive with steeply raked windshields and aggressive grilles. The tracks for the sliding side doors are cleverly camouflaged under the rear side windows for a clean appearance. The d-pillars and rear window are steeply inclined for a sporty look, and a discrete spoiler rises from the trailing edge of the roof. Flared wheel openings add strength to the appearance. Headlamps and tail lamps are big, the latter wrapping around to the sides. The optional roof rack is hunkered close to the roof, stylistically less obtrusive and perhaps less likely to generate wind noise, but also offering less clearance for the thicker hooks of some tie-downs. for 2005, dodge freshened the caravan's appearance with a new u-shaped grille featuring black bars behind dodge's trademark body-color crosshairs, a design cue shared with the new dodge magnum. Also new was a molded-in license plate pocket and revised fog lamps, while new body-colored side moldings protected the door. These details have continued unchanged for 2006. models with power sliding doors on both sides add convenience when moving passengers. Press the button on the remote transmitter twice and the door slides open; press it twice again and it slides closed and seals. From the second-row seat, the power sliding door can be opened and closed by pressing a button; it can also be opened manually. A safety lock switch hidden on the trailing edge of the door can be engaged to prevent a child from opening the sliding door from inside. The power sliding doors can be fussy when passengers are in a hurry to get out, however, and passengers usually are in a hurry. Pulling on the outside lever opens the power door manually, with just slightly more effort than opening a regular manual door. the standard manually operated sliding doors are easy to operate, smoothly gliding open and closed with the pull of a nicely designed lever. The outside door handles are comfortable and well designed; they impart a feeling of quality in appearance and operation. All door handles should be this good. a power rear liftgate is available that adds convenience when picking up groceries or supplies. Press a button on the remote control and the liftgate opens or closes automatically. The material is soft and appears to be durable. Faux carbon fiber trim added a touch of high-tech to the cabin. the seats in the grand caravan seemed more bucket-like than those of the similar chrysler town & country, and not as comfortable. The dodge has a manually adjustable lumbar support, however, and the seatbacks seem to have more side bolstering than in the t&c. The power seat adjusters have exposed screws on them that do not feel aesthetically pleasing. The seating position is higher than that of a sedan, which enables drivers to see over traffic. The second and third rows of seats fold flat into the floor leaving a perfectly flat platform for cargo. Folding and unfolding the seats is a quick three-step process. Pull one strap to drop the seatback, then pull two other straps to tuck it into the floor. This leaves a perfectly flat platform. Very few seats fold perfectly flat and no one else (except chrysler) has a second row that does this. The system is also flexible. The third row is split 60/40 and either or both of the second-row captain's chairs can be stowed.
